A later chapter
As families moved from the old Juderia in the nineteenth century, communal life followed them across the city. Karataş gained its own institutions, including the Jewish Hospital and the Historical Elevator, while Alsancak became the centre of community life today and Karşıyaka carried Jewish life across the bay.
