Jewish heritage sites in Izmir include active religious spaces, historic synagogues, cemeteries and community buildings. Some are open only by prior arrangement. Others may be visible from the street but not available for independent entry.

Plan your visit

İzmir rewards a slow, respectful visit. The old Juderia around Havra Street in Kemeraltı holds the historic synagogue cluster and sits within a working bazaar, so it can be combined with the market, the Kortijos and the Kadifekale slopes. Karataş, above the bay, adds Bet Israel, the former Jewish Hospital and the Historical Elevator, with Dario Moreno Street below it.

A good visit begins with reading, an audio tour and an enquiry. Start with Heritage to choose what matters most to you, use Audio Tours to orient yourself, and contact the community in advance for any site that needs permission. Please treat active religious and community spaces with the care they are due; they are living places, not open attractions.

Visits to historic synagogues are subject to permission from the Jewish Community Foundation of Izmir. The visit process may involve an authorised guide or local partner, depending on the site and the timing of the request.
