Historical Context
Jewish İzmir
Jewish life in İzmir has been documented from the early modern period onward. Over time, the community was connected with synagogues, schools, charitable institutions, printing, trade, family networks and cultural production.
The historical centre of this life was around Kemeraltı and the old Jewish quarter. In later periods, parts of the community also became associated with Karataş, Alsancak and other parts of the city.

The foundation
The Jewish Community Foundation of İzmir works to meet the social, cultural and religious needs of the Jewish community in İzmir.
The community’s historical roots in the city go back to the early seventeenth century. The foundation received its current legal status in 2012.
